Transmission problem
2002 Chevy Cavalier 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

I have a 2002 chevy cavalier, the check engine light came on and the trac off light. I had autozone look up the code on it and it said to replace the Shift Solenoid. My question is where is the shift solenoid located? and can you give me step by step instruction to install it?

shift solenoid is in the transaxle valve body and it can fail simply due to normal wear and tear (daily use)

I need to replace my shift solenoid on my 96 Chevy cavalier 2.2 Liter with a 4T40E transmission and I was wondering the easiest possible way to do so. I've heard several things and need to know for sure what I need to do! Thank you!

the side plate cover has to be removed to access the shift solenoids. that is the difficult part..

1. Negative battery cable.
2. Install engine support fixture, J 28467-360.
3. Air cleaner assembly.
4. Upper transaxle support assembly bolts.
5. Upper case side cover bolts.
6. Raise and support the vehicle.
7. Left wheel and tire assembly.
8. Left splash shield.
9. Transaxle mount pipe expansion bolt.
10. Transaxle mount to body bolts.
11. Lower transaxle support assembly bolts.
12. Transaxle mount and support assembly.
13. Left outer tie rod from steering knuckle assembly using J 24319-B.
14. Left ball joint from steering knuckle assembly using J 38892.
15. Brake caliper from steering knuckle assembly and support with line attached.
16. Drive axle from transaxle and support.
17. Front suspension support brace.
18. Oil cooler lines from transaxle.
19. Clips attaching wire harness to body.
20. Remove left suspension support bolts and loosen right bolts enough to remove case side cover.
21. Lower vehicle.
22. Lower transaxle with engine support fixture enough to remove case side cover.
23. Raise and support the vehicle.
24. Case side cover bolts.
25. Case side cover and gasket

If there are no leaks I really doubt its a low fluid level issue.Do you have a multi meter?what kind of scan tool do you have brand and model?

Is transmission shifting normally? Also, pay attention to the shift from 2nd to 3rd. Does it shift smoothly and at the right time?

As far as your question, servicing the trans fluid wouldn't fix this problem.

Let me know.

Hello,

It is located inside the Transmission Pan. Take the Transmission pan off and it will be mounted in the Valve Body, should be easy to identify. There should be 2. I would replace both. The shift solenoid is not located in the pan area. 8 hour job, pull transmission ect.
