The service light is telling you it is time for an oil change for the engine here is a guide to show you how.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-change-engine-oil-and-filter

To reset the light once completed turn the key tot he on position without starting the engine then press down fully on the accelerator 5 times rapidly. This will reset the light.

Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

Cheers

Hello, I would appreciate your answer reg. a problem I am having for the last 2 days (Chevrolet Cavalier 2002) ... which is: the "service" light (yellow and located on the lower left side) goes on when I start the engine, than goes off and when I put the car in gear I hear 8 quick clicks along with a light on the upper right side)!!!
This only happens one time at the start and right after i put the car in gear (usually in reverse, honestly I haven't tried if it happens the same in drive). ...
... how bad is this, can I still drive my car and roughly how much do you think it will cost me?

Thank you in advance!

Could be a relay about to go, or bad connection.

What light is coming on? You said SES light goes off after engine is started (normal), so what light is coming on? ABS, traction control, security?

Help! I have a 2002 Chevy Cavalier. The service light comes on as soon as I put the car in gear. It does not come on until I put the car in gear. The running lights light on the dash board flickers on and off and I can hear the relay in the fuse box clicking on and off. As soon as the running lights light on the dash board stops turning on and off, the service light comes on. Is this because the running lights are not working? If I change the headlight bulbs, will that fix the trouble?

I had a 2000 sunfire that did the same thing. the clicking you hear is most likely the daytime running light relay. it will click about four times and then the little wrench will light up. It may be you have a bad bulb the car I had it was a bad wire by the battey and the bulbs were fine. Also as a side not the low beams worked but the high beams did't. Look at your bulbs or test for voltage at plug. Hope it helps.

upon looking on forums many other people have this same issue I just have not resolved mine, I just bought this car for my wife it is the ls model the headlights work the fogs work the blinkers work the backup lights work and the high beam works" I See No Day Time Runining Lights on as the car is on". The problem is when I turn the car on all fine no problems when I put the car in drive or reverse the DRL ICON flickers On the dash for a couple seconds then disappears then the service light pops on. the head lights flicker for about three seconds at the same time, The things I have done to try and fix this issue was replacing the relay fuse and both BCM fuses in the fuse box in the car, I replaced both headlight bulbs with 9007 and blinker bulbs, My car has 119,000 miles. My car has an automatic transmission.

2001 Chevy Cavalier 117000 miles

When put into gear, the headlight lamp on the control panel flickers a bunch of times and then the service light comes on, and stays on during driving. Goes out after car is parked and turned off , and then started and put into gear again. It is an automatic. 4 cylinder car.

You need to do a CAn scan which does the entire car, you can get a CAN scanner (Controller Area Network) from Amazon for about $36.00 here is a video to show you how.

here is a scanner link

Take it to any autoparts store and get the PCM scanned for free, it will give you some idea of what is wrong.

its a check engine light. first check your gas cap and make sure it is tight. other wise you need the vehicle scanned. go to your local parts store and have them scan it. come back and tell me your codes that they get

This service engine soon light is different than a check engine light on GM products. Normally there are codes that go along with this light that a lot of scanners cannot read. However, if there are no codes then you more than likely have a fuse blown or some less serious issue. This is a common thing that is not understood so I would start there.

Go through all your fuse boxes and check all the fuses. Replace any that are blown.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-a-car-fuse

Also, it varies between GM vehicles, but this light can also mean you are due for an oil change. So here is a guide that will help with resetting this light if that is the issue:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/oil-life-reset

If none of this works then we will have to dig further and check the scanner that you are using to find out if it has the ability to scan for body codes (B codes) because you may have a code but just not able to pull it.

Please let us know what you find. Thanks
