1999 Chevy Cavalier 4 cyl Automatic 78000 miles

Old belt shredded on edge put on new belt within seconds new belt shredded same place outer edge not motor side

If none of the pulleys are locked up, then one or more pulleys are not all lined up properly ( out of alignment ) or your tensioner is bad.

yes i know...if one of the pulleys (power steering, a/c etc...) is misaligned it will shred the belt..

we think it may be the air conditioner pulley, does this mean I have to replace the entire ac unit?

no, you can get the a/c pulley only for probably $10 - $15 at a junk yard or $25 - $30 brand new.

Thanks, can I replace the pulley even if the ac pulley bearings are shot, because the ac is not working

if the bearings are bad then the pulley is probably frozen up? pulley is actually not at fault then, that would indeed be the compressor ..

good to know.. I wouldn't have guessed the compressor would shred a belt
