1999 Chevy Cavalier I cant get out of neutral

Ok, I put my car in reverse and then when I was goint to put in drive it got stuck in neutral and now I cant get the car to forward or back. What could be the problem? I really would appreciate some help with this issue.

Inspect the shift cable to trans, a bracket may be loose or the cable is binding.

If cable is OK, remove the shift console and inspect shifter mechanisim.
