1999 Chevy Cavalier compressor

My compressor cycles on and off very five to ten seconds while the system is running. It does cool while you are driving down the road. Is the compressor going out or is it a switch? If it is a switch can it be replaced without having to go to a shop? I have a limited income and need to fix it myself if I can.

It is most likely low on freon caused by a leak. You can buy some 134a and add until full, if compressor works OK, then it will probably leak out again sooner or later depending on size of leak.
