1998 Chevy Cavalier 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

Problem started a few days ago, when I start the car it kind of hums. When i press the gas it makes this winding noise that is somewhat high pitched , when I slow down or take my foot off the gas the winding seems to slow down until i come to a stop and the winding stops. I have no idea what this could be but would like an idea to see if it needs to go somewhere or something easy i can take care of

you may be low on power steering fluid. have you check to see if you have any leaks.

can you remove the belt and see if it is a pulley that maybe locking up and getting a bad bearing

So I took my car to the shop , turns out the car has been only running off the battery and needs a new alternator. was reading at 12 volts? Mechanic could not believe I've been able to start the car or able to drive it for the last week and a half. I have not been able to start it late at night or early in the morning when its too cold but should be able to start it one more time tomorrow morning to bring it to the shop
