Smells problem

Good morning....Yesterday morning I noticed a strong smell of gas while driving to work....then when I was driving home in the evening, my car turned off by itself while I was driving......I stopped at a mechanic and they checked for any broken hoses, but could not readily view any damage.....I am to take my car to them again this morning so they can check it more thoroughly, but I would like to be able to tell them what the problem may be upfront.......Can you please help me...Aida
