okay, when i tried to strat my girlfriend car, i just made a loud grinding sound, it wont roll over at all. i had her stand and watch the belt and she said its turning, just not very fast. so my guess was something was wrong in there. i thought it would either be a piston or something seized up or the starter was out. so i removed the serpintine belt from the car so the starter would be free. i tried cranking it again and it still just makes the grinding sound. my question would be, do u think it would be the starter and if so how do i replace it. i will feel like an idiot if you tell me its not conected on the serpintine belt line and it is a siezed engine, so let me hear some good news :)

If the belt is turning that means the starter is engaging/cranking the engine but has a problem either excessive clearance between the flywheel and starter pinion or the overrunning clutch in the starter is slipping.
