1997 Chevy Cavalier gas tube leak

Does the gas tank have to be dropped to replace the neck tube that goes from gas opening and attaches to tank. Tank appears to to sound but leak is present when pumping in gas.

Yes, but just a little. Be sure to replace this gas filler hose with a new filler hose for your car. This hose is very expensive considering it's length. The reason it is expensive is because it must stand up to gasoline and the vapor from the gas. If you use a hose that is not designed for this it will fail.
It is best to go to the dealers' parts department for this hose...
