Smells problem
1997 Chevy Cavalier 4 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

Recently, I have noticed that my car seems to be "leaking" gas smells. It started several months ago, and was so faint that for the longest time I thought that I was imagining the problem. However, in the past 2 weeks the problem has gotten worse. It is now bad enough that I am nervous to drive the car.

In the past two weeks I have also had problems turning on the car. It does not happen every time, but often enough that it is disconcerting. The car will make noise like it is turning over, then never fully start. If I wait a second or two then try again, it usually starts. However, it has taken me up to 4 tries to start the engine.

Finally, this has not happened recently, but i feel it is worth noting. My "check oil" light was coming on despite the fact that I had just refilled the oil. I was on a 3 hour trip and stopped several times to check the level of the tank, and each time the oil was full. The light continued to go on and off for the entire trip and again for the return trip. I have not driven the car over 20 mins since the trip, so I do not know if it would go on again if I drove a long distance.

I am currently not driving the car at all. However, I am not familiar with the mechanics where I am living and would like to go into the shop with at least an idea of possible problems that my car might be having. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much!

The gas smell is probabaly a fuel injector seal leaking, or the fuel pressure regulator diaphram ruptured.

But I would have the entire fuel system inspected.

The check oil light is most likely a bad oil level sender.
