Noises problem

My Chevy has been squealing for about a couple months now. When I took it in for an oil change the tech said that I need to replace my power steering belt and ball-bearings. I know very little about cars so I was wondering if that could be correct, how serious of a problem that is, and how much should I expect to pay in repairs?
