1996 Chevy Cavalier speed sensor gear inside transmission

I have a cavalier that has the speed sensor code And erratic speedomete (no shifting when speedometer not working). Checked the wiring and all ok replaced the speed sensor and cleared the code. 10 min later same prob. replaced speed sensor (thought a faulty part)No fix. removed the speed sensor and noticed that the adjoining gear inside trans is free spinning. What holds the gear to the shaft? Can i repair it w/o removing trans? if not do i have to disassemble trans to repair it?

I have already replaced the speed sensor and it unbolts like you said. It has the gov attached. the gear i asked about is the adjoining gear inside the transmission. It is a plastic ger and it free spins on the shaft. what holds it to the shaft ? can i replace it through the side where cv axle is?

The housing will unbolt and speed sensor rotor can be removed along with governor.

Do not edit your post I will not be informed click on reply.The housing the sensor bolts to comes off look on backside you'll see bolt remove the plastic gear is exposed. Has clip and washer holding it to gov. shaft that spins off output gear giving speed.

Are we talking the same gear?/Im not talking about the gear that is in the speed sensor, im talking about the gear inside the transmission that the speed sensor sits into. It looks as if it is on the output shaft.

not the gear that is physically attached to the speed sencor and gov. ( the speed sensor come w a gear,gov and sensor. The gear is plastic and is approx 2 1/2 "

Well you already removed housing what you have drawn is sensor rotor and govenor. the gear inside is on output and yes trans axle will have to come out and pulled apart to repair.

does the transmission have to b removed? or can i do it where i take axle out of?easy fiix? Or do i have to disassemble whole transaxle? if so can ido it w/o removing trans from vehicle?

Like I said transaxle must come out and be disassembled. Governor gear is on differential most likely thrust bearing is worn allowing gear to spin.
