1995 Chevy Cavalier muffler making rattling noises

i have a 95 chevy cavalier z24 2.3L wit 155000 miles. a while ago the muffler started making rattling noises and i found out it was the catalytic converter but midas ran a diagnostic an the engine wasnt giving their machine any codes...now when i try to cut it on (when it actually decides to crank) it gets stuck in nuetral..could this be caused by the CC or would this solution be solved by replacing the CC?

Not sure I understand what you are asking. If CC is rattling, it is either loose, rubbing against a shield, or the material inside the CC has broken and chunks are rattling around. The CC would have to be replaced in the case of the latter.

I see no direct relationship with shifting out of neutral and a CC problem.

thanks for replying bro....so basically what youre telling me is that the problem wit my CC and my transmission being stuck in nuetral are two different problems right?

Right,

Check the shift cable, make sure it is not loose or seperated from a hold down bracket, also make sure the motor mounts are good. If all is OK, then remove the shift console and inspect the shift mechanisim for broken parts.

The inside of the CC contains a "honeycomb" looking material. This material is strong but subject to overheating (which will melt it) and is usually caused by an rich A/F mixture. It is also subject to impact, that is, if hit hard enough the material will crack and can break off into chunks inside housing causing the rattling noise.

well its an automatic and when i try to crank it...it wont go into drive..it goes from park to nuetral and stays...thats why i was thinking it was my transmission..

Check the shifter cable, make sure it is working and is not binding or broken. Have a friend move shifter while you watch the cable connection at trans. If trans. lever is not moving while shifter is, then cable is broke.
