Dear Sirs:

We have a 1995 Chevrolet Caprice station wagon with the 5.7L engine. Occasionally when we exit the vehicle the interior lights stay on. We have to go back and reshut the driver's door to get them to go off. They always go off when we are in the vehicle and we turn the key on. We have replaced the courtesy lamp relay in the past. We just replaced the driver's door switch so we don't know if that might have solved the problem.

I would like to know what device controls the 40-second delay of the courtesy lights going off and where it is located. Also how does turning the key on make the courtesy lights go out? I saw an interior lights diode in the wiring diagram. What does it do and where is it located? What else could be causing our problem?

The door switch was most likely the problem if slamming it would make the lights go out.The BCM (Body Control Module) controls the interior lights, if it sees the ignition powered up it will shut down certain things like the lights, so that if you want them on while driving they have to be turned on manually
