1987 Chevy Caprice What a/c compressor+ clutch do I need?

Are you converting to 134A ? Have you made a repair? if so what was done. You have a V5 variable displacement and it has no crankcase for oil. Oil is carried through system with the refigerant.

The car was converted to R134 a few years ago and seems to leak out each year. This year, when I turned on the a/c, the clutch didn't kick in. Also, when the a/c is off and working properly, I usually hear a relay cycle on and off. This year it didn't cycle.

I don't know the details of the conversion.

As I understand you, oil-less means oil is carried through the a/c system?

Yes on oil-less statment. Do you have gages to test with? You should have 90psi or more at rest. If you leak freon you remove oil also. You can add oil assuming it is PAG most likely is. And you can add stop leak cause sounds like an evaporator leak also very common to Chevy.

Aren't stop leak products for a/c systems a temporary fix?.

I'll keep the evaporator in mind when I take it into the shop. Auto-Zone guy took a look under the hood and said it was the compressor because there was oil on it, but I had sprayed the belt with silicone.

Think I should take it an AC Delco repair shop? So far, 3 local mechanics have disappointed me with minor repairs not related to the a/c.

I spoke to my current mechanic and he said that "you just have to live with the leaks and recharge it every year". Sounds like they won't take the time to find the leak.

Look for an A.S.E. Certified shop that specializes in AC repair. If leak becomes hard to find ask for Dye to be put in system then the dye glows flourscaint geen where leak is.
