Looking for a little wisdom on my problem. I have a 1984 chevy caprice with a 305 H engine code. It has a 4 barrel carb, all emissions in tact and get great gas mileage out of this vehicle this thing is in near mint condition. My problem is I am experiencing a knocking/Pinging (preignition) problem. What I noticed is that if I drive my normal commute that is about 20 miles on the highway It runs great no problems. On my way home I experience a lot of traffic and once I sit in the traffic moving at a snails pace, and once I start to move again I notice a severe pinging. It does not overheat and idles great, but upon any acceleration it pings real bad it sounds as if all 8 cylinders are detonating prematurely. Once I let it sit for a while I can get it and everything is good. I have not changed any parts yet but after reading and what I already know, I was thinking EGR sticking or the knock sensor itself. I just bought this car last February and I noticed the check engine light does not come on when I turn the key on.

What do you think about the pinging, and If I am getting really really good gas mileage like 25mpg out of this thing I really doubt that the computer has been disconnected maybe just the light bulb is out, any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi:
It could be the knock sensor. Make sure that it's not heating up in traffic. Also, try a higher octane fuel.

Let me know what you find.
