I have a 1966 chevrolet caprice automatic 327 that is eating batteries (overcharging) I have replaced the voltage regulator and the alternator checks out fine. Looking for ideas on other likely causes...

What is the charging voltage at idle with no accessories on?

Try unplugging the voltage regulator and take a second reading.
