Hi there my Tach reads about 5000 rpm at idle, I have checked the wiring as per the factory manual.

All the circuits checkout okay ,I have replaced the Tach as recommended by the manual but the new one does the same thing ,where do I look next?

I had the same problem with the tach on my 92 Camaro. Tried the resistor fix but it didnt work. Finally found a tach board at the junkyard that worked for about a year.
I found a new replacement tach board. Only had it for about a week but it seemed to fix the problem! Hurray!!

Sounds like a ground problem with the gauge.

the gauges are not all grounded together. Here is the location of the ground on the connector for the tach.
