1988 Chevy Camaro Steering wheel ignition lock

1988 Chevy Camaro 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual 17K miles

I have removed the ign. cyclinder lock and key from my camaro. The reason was that the key would not come out of the lock. I know to depress the release to get it out. The problen the key would not rotate to the lock position to lock the steering wheel os the key would come out. I have purchased a new cyclinder lock and key and have installed but it still will not lock the steering wheel and the key won't come out of the lock. It will go to start and turn off but not to the lock position. What can I do to check the problem. I'm at the point of removing the intire steering column.

To better assist you please tell me if your model is just a Camaro or the IROC-Z. Also your engine size in liter and the 8th digit of your VIN.

The camaro is a standard RS camaro 2.8 V6 MPFI engine. 5 speed trans. No power door locks no power windows. It does have power steering and AC.
The vin is S. No tilit wheel,

Hello Thanks for the info. It doesn't sound like you have the cylinder lined up correctly during installation. I have attached a pic and the installation for you. I have also included the info on the ignition switch to ensure it is correct. LOCK CYLINDER Removal Remove turn signal switch as previously described. Turn lock cylinder to "ON" position. Remove key warning buzzer switch and lock cylinder attaching screw. Remove lock cylinder. Installation Turn lock cylinder to "STOP" position. Aligning lock cylinder in housing, install retaining screw. Turn lock cylinder to "ON" position. Install key warning buzzer switch. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. IGNITION SWITCH Fig. 2: Lock Cylinder Mechanism Removal 1. Steering column must be lowered (removed on some models) to gain access to ignition switch. Steering wheel removal is nor required. Place lock cylinder in "OFF" position. 2. If lock cylinder has already been removed, pull actuating rod up until it stops. Back off actuating rod 2 detents. Remove switch retaining screw and stud. Lift switch from column. Detach actuator rod. Installation 1. Place lock cylinder in "OFF" position. Place switch in OFF position by moving selector to top of switch and then backing off 2 detents. 2. On fixed columns, fit actuator rod into slider hole. Install switch onto steering column. Tighten attaching stud and screw. 3. On tilt or telescope columns, install switch. Lightly push switch down on column to take up free play in actuator rod. Tighten attaching stud and screw. Connect wiring harness. Check operation of ignition switch.

Hello - Also, some may be outdated but I would still check, it looks like you may have some recalls on your vehicle. The dealer may fix these for free. Please contact the dealer service department, give them the VIN number of your car and have them check on these to see if they apply to you.
