hi i have a 79 camaro with a 305. i recently put a new cam in it. a comp cams 268H. anyway i have set ignition timing to 4 degrees btdc like the spec says. i have set the fast idle a curb idle to spec as well. i have a new fuel filter and new choke pull off. new float, needle and seat. the flot i have set to i believe 5/16. now it starts and runs pretty well. i can put it into gear and it will roll. but when i step on the gas in drive or reverse it will die. i was wondering what could make it do that. (also i did this stuff with no air cleaner attached) dont know if that would make a difference. ( the carb is a rochester dual jet) thanks for the help!

can you give it gas slowly?
Maybe the plunger is bad, or you didn't get it hook back up right.

with the engine off and the air cleaner removed.
look down inside the carb,
when you open the throttle quickly, you should see a stream of fuel from a small brass tube up high in the throat.

But i bet that you will not,
either the plunger is bad,
the tube is plugged.
you didn't get that little BB check ball back in place
or the linkage is not hooked up right.

ok i looked down inside and when i snap the throttle 2 streams of fuel shoot out in to each barrel.. i do see some brass tubes in the middle of each barrel but no fuel comes out of those. are those the tubes you are talking about? .....and are you talking about a TPS plunger? because i don't think i have one.. and are you saying the throttle linkage might not be right?? or the choke linkage and stuff like that?

sorry about all the questions..this really helps me alot i appreciate this very much. im trying to learn about carbs..they don't teach it in school anymore.. thanks again!

I'm going to cut your question up in to smaller parts
[quote:325629163d="79camaro88"]ok i looked down inside and when i snap the throttle 2 streams of fuel shoot out in to each barrel.. and are you talking about a TPS plunger? because i don't think i have one.. and are you saying the throttle linkage might not be right?? or the choke linkage and stuff like that?[/quote:325629163d]
Ok, since you get those two streams of gas, then the accelerator plunger is working, And I was talking about the linkage that depresses the accelerator plunger.

[quote:325629163d="79camaro88"] i do see some brass tubes in the middle of each barrel but no fuel comes out of those. [/quote:325629163d]You should have fuel coming out of those when the throttle is open.
Either there is a blockage, or you dont have the float height set right.

be careful not to be directly over the carburetor.

If it back fires with you right over it, it will burn off your eye brows and possibly hurt your vision.

your float height information should have come with paper work in the carb rebuild kit you used.

i have bought 3 different rebuild kits and they don't list this carb. all i can find are specs on other carbs. looking my sheet over i saw that mast vehicles in 1979 with a 305 had a 15/16 float level

Don't think float level is problem. Is this a 2 BBl carb E2M series? If yes not ehough CFM for that cam.

i think i have a big vaccumm leak at idl3 i have between 8-10 inches of mercury. thats pretty low correct?? and that would account for it dying when put into gear.

Are you checkig vacuum at a port on intake? if yes the needs to be like 15 20 in. Reading indicates late valve timing so maybe issue with cam instalation.
