Trying to replace the hood release cable on my wife's 1999 Chevy S10 Blazer. Picked up a repair manual, disabled battery/SIR, removed grill/hood release/interior kick panel, unclipped the cable, and unbolted the cable handle. Tried to pull the thing out through the passenger compartment, but the rubber grommet wouldn't budge. Looked again - there's not enough room between the vehicle body and the emergency brake assembly for the grommet to pass. Is this typical? It wasn't mentioned in any manuals I saw. Do I need to remove the emergency brake assembly to replace the cable? How should I go about doing that?

You'll need to loosen the EM brake mounting enough so you can squeeze the grommet through. It's a tight fit, but it'll come through.
