we bought this truck and when you put it in reverse it just sits there. if you play around moving the shifter to d n etc. and go back to r for reverse it may or may not work. the guy tells us his friend who works on cars said that the cable was streched at it would have to be replaced

The shift linkage cable may be loose, bent or out of adjustment. Having problems with the shifter showing one gear, but vehicle is actually in another gear? Such as, putting it in N (Neutral) but vehicle is really in D (Drive) ? This is another sign of bad shift linkage cable.

Losing reverse is always scary, because that is the gear that gives out first when the transmission itself is going south.. but if playing with the gear shift is eventually the temporary fix to putting it in reverse, then I doubt the transmission itself is harmed.
