Engine Cooling problem
1997 Chevy Blazer 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive 73,000 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
The engine overheated on the freeway recently. I got out of traffic at the first exit, added water and let the engine cool down for about 35-40 minutes. I got back on the freeway for about 40 miles, then got off, added more water and let the engine cool for another 30-35 minutes. As I continued uphill, the " check gages" light came on, I pullld over and the engine was VERY hot indeed. I had the car towed to one mechanic who said it was a cracked head gasket. I towed it to another who said it was the water pump. There was no white smoke, no dirty oil. Which diagnosis is more accurate? Will I damage the engine when I drive it if I just fix the water pump? I don't want to be taken advantage of as I am on a fixed income. Thanks for your help.l
