Engine Cooling problem
1997 Chevy Blazer 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

My Blazer has started heating up sporadically while driving. I will notice that the heater quits blowing warm air, then within minutes my car overheats. It has done this twice now. This happens while driving, not at idle, and there has been a week between the two occurances.
I have looked via several resources, and I can't find any explanation for the heater quitting and the car overheating. My best guess is that I have a bad water pump or thermostat. I would like to have an idea of the repairs required before going to the shop in order to avoid unessesary costs.
Any input is greatly appreciated.
