I need to replace the boot an floor shifter (automatic) How do I get the shifter knob off? Does it require a special tool

No special tool. There is a small metal staple that holds the shift handle to the stalk. Look on the front of the handle on the lower section and you will see a small slot where the clip gets slid in. You need a small hooked tool to pull the clip. Then pull the handle straight up. The shift boot pulls up with a couple clips that hold it in place. It just snaps in.
