1996 Chevy Blazer grinding and stuck in 4x4

1996 Chevy Blazer 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

When driving in 4x4 after about 5-10 minutes i hear loud grinding noises. I try to put it back into 2 wheel drive but it stays in 4x4. If i keep driving it will stay in 4x4 for another 5-10 minutes and then it sounds louder than a shotgun when it finally kicks out! Possibly my transfer case?

Have you tried to back the vehicle up when you disengage the 4wd? Is the transfer case full? Is the linkage to the transfer case properly adjusted?

Is this a manual shift 4wd or electric?

Backing up does not work, the transfer case is full, and it is a push button 4x4. I have not checked the linkage
