Engine Mechanical problem

my car just started losing power. it only happened when i first started it up and it got worse when if the car was already warmed up. it would hover like it was running out of gas and then shut off. it did this for like a week and now it won't even start. i was told it was a sensor somewhere on the top of the engine, but i don't know the name of it so it's kind of hard to fix. please advise. thank you.
