2005 Chevy Aveo Car frequently will not turn off all the w

The car will not turn all the way off when put in Park until I redo it until the car turns off. I keep putting the gearshift through the gears to park until the car turns off. This takes a while. However, at times it works correctly. I don't have a owner's manual and I am wondering if I am doing something wrong. There is a HOLD buttom and a Shift Release Lock button. I don't know what either of these do.
