2004 Chevy Avalanche speedometer works then stops working o

I haven't got a repair engine light yet. but my speedometer works then stops working .was told it may be a speed sensor was sold one. how do i replace it?looking at the tranny from the rear,which sensor do i replace at the tail of the tranny shaft .The passanger side or the driver side one...
