2003 Chevy Avalanche 4 wheel drive whining

my 4wd has developed some sort of whining problem. ive changed out the gear oil and found no signs of wear or burning. as soon as the 4wd is turned off it disappears. all the driveline coponents are intact and in good working order.

please help!
