My 2000 Chevy Astro van engine died while on a 2 hour trip. The engine restarted briefing but would not idle. An inspection showed the radiator cap was lose and very little water in the radiator. After towing the vehicle to my home, water mixed with oil showed up on the oil dipstick. When I drained the oil pan, I had several quarts of water along with the oil. I assume that I have one or more blown head gaskets at the minimum. The repair shop quoted me around $3,500 to replace gaskets and heads. Before I embark on this expenditure I had a couple of questions: 1) Would a blown head gasket keep the engine from running?, 2) With water in the crankcase, could damage have been done to the crankshaft, pistons, etc.,? 3) What would overheating do to the heads, i.e. crack, warp,? 4) Would repairing an engine with this many miles be worth the cost?
