check engine light is illuminated

the problem i am having is when they (PepBoys) plugged into the computer harness there is no dial tone, for lack of a good metaphor. so where do i go to check the fuses and/or relays for the computer? what is the abbreviation for the computer?

So the scanner cannot communicate with the PCM (power-train control module). With GM, I would start with checking the fuses. That diagnostic connector gets its power from the same circuit that the auxiliary power (cigarette lighter) is on. Check fuse number 55 (gas engine) or 53 (diesel) in the under-hood fuse box. If it is blown, replace it, get the truck scanned, and let us know.
