Sure, the expansion valve is bolted to the evaporator inside the car, but the expansion valve sits at the firewall. Here is how to change it out and this video can help vacuum down and recharge the system.

Thanks I'm having shop take refrigerated and rented vacuum to suck out the moisture. Also, I'm supposed to vacuum down after new repairs/replacement as well to pull any moisture that might have gotten into the open system, correct?

The only way to recharge the system that I have is the cans from auto store. Is that possible with the new compressor? Some compressors won't engage without charge pressure will this be an issue?

Yes, you are supposed to vacuum down the system anytime it has been opened. Yes, you can add refrigerant to the system from a can which will work just fine. Once the system has pressure the compressor will kick on so you can complete the charge.

Will I need to add new pag oil or will the vacuum do that for me? How much pag oil or how do it tell?

When replacing the expansion valve no PAG oil is needed. You should be able to see a slight amount of oil inside the refrigerant tubes and valve.

Okay, kind of a crossover question. When replacing my compressor, evaporator, and dryer do I need to add oil or what's in the line should be good enough?

The new compressor is the only part you need to worry about, it will have the correct amount of oil, or it will have instructions on how to set the compressor up before installation.

Okay, so did the A/C package. Once replaced expansion valve and vacuumed down it held vacuum overnight. It took r134 fine and was blowing amazing cold air. Shut the car off and heard leaking saw it coming from expansion valve. I replaced the seals. Maybe didn't push lines in good and straight? Also, there's this weird hexagon "port" I guess on the bottom of the valve is that just a spot to help hold in place. I didn't need to take out insulation around valve should I have to secure it? I have extra seals. I mean it was visibly blowing out.

So, vacuum done system, check rings, make sure lines are in straight and securely in place before screwing the bolts back in?

Maybe just didn't tighten bolts good enough?

Yes, the O rings must be clean and clear from obstructions to seal correctly, you can upload an image so I can see if needed.

Here's old expansion valve. First pic is the front so line with ring goes into top hole and bottom hole line goes into with ring. Middle hole holds the lines in place and two side holes are for bolts. Most bolts for ac say don't overtighten. Do I tighten these more? I'll open the system and take pics of the current set up as well. thanks.

So I've noticed the new txv had new gaskets on it, but the old one didn't. I'm guessing I might have left old gasket, no o-ring, on the evaporator. Hopefully that's it. Waiting for neighbor to get home so I can get t27 socket and will update once opened thanks.

Yep, it looks okay, don't worry about the plug in the bottom of the valve, make sure the surfaces are clean and you have new gaskets/seal and you should be okay. Do not over tighten over you will break the evaporator core. Let me know how it goes.
