On the 1.9L diesel, there is one. It is located under the vehicle and is part of the exhaust system.

To get you started, here is a link that explains in general how one is replaced. You can use this as a guide.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/catalytic-converter-replacement

If you look at the attachments below, they include the directions for replacement and pics specific to your vehicle.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe

See pics below. Note: The directions below are for all components on the exhaust system. I'm adding them in the event they are needed.

It is not a diesel engine, it's the 2 door hatchback GLS, is it still only one catalytic converter then?

Hi,

I am not showing a 1.9L gas engine. Take a look below at the pic I attached. It shows the options for a 2002 New Beetle GLS. The only 1.9L is a diesel. Could you have made a mistake on the engine size? As far as a gas engine, there is a 1.8 or a 2.0.

Let me know.

On the 2.0 it has a single converter mounted below the car. The 02 should have either an AVH or AZG code engine. That info will be on the emission sticker under the hood. It will also tell you if it's a federal or california emission car. That can be important depending on your location as some places require a certified part be used. They also used 2 different units on them, they are easy to tell apart, one has a single pipe as shown while the other has two that merge into one. If yours is an 02 it should be the single pipe version.
