Catalytic converter and resonator

Thank you for the reply. I took my vehicle into the service department because the exhaust system did not sound right. First they told me it was my catalytic converter which I was sort of suspicious about because I just passed a California emissions test two weeks ago. A couple hours later the service department called me back and said it is actually my resonator and muffler and that my catalytic converter is good. He then proceeded to tell me that the resonator and muffler cannot be replaced without replacing the whole catalytic converter. I do not believe this to be correct because I know people remove the resonator for performance. Anyhow he said it will cost $1,500.00. I asked if he could just replace the muffler and resonator and he said that cannot be done? I call BS. This is a Ford dealership by the way. What is my best approach? Take it somewhere else or do it myself. Thanks for your time.

Wow. The muffler or resonator is available by itself as I showed in the picture I sent you.

Take it somewhere else and have them check it for you.

Even if you got the most expensive one, it is $135.00 for parts and one hour in labor. You would be looking at about $250.00 to $300.00 for the repair.

Thank you. Yes that is what I thought. I told the same thing to the service tech and then I told him, "Can you not just remove it entirely?" With his head down he kind of mumbled and said, "No that is illegal." Ridiculous. Off hand would you know if the catalytic converter is covered due to rust. I originally purchased the vehicle in New York state and due to the snow some of what is underneath became rusted, including the catalytic converter. I know that Ford has a 80,000 miles manufacturer warranty that covers the converter but did not know if in this type of situation (weather), it would be covered. Thanks for all the information.

Yes, it disconnects from the catalytic converter as seen in the first picture. You need to go to another shop and you will get a much better price.
