There could be may reasons for this condition. If your check engine light is "on", please have the codes read and post them here so that I can help your track down the problem.

A few things to check/complete:

Check for loose/disconnected hos going to the air cleaner housing. If a major hose is disconnected or loose it could cause stalling.

This guide will help

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/checking-a-service-engine-soon-or-check-engine-light-on-or-flashing

Clean the throttle body, often when dirty, these can cause the engine to stall.

Check for major vacuum leaks such as a large vacuum hose disconnected from the intake manifold or throttle body. Be sure to check the PCV hose (check its entire length).

Check for loose connections at the positive battery cable, where it attaches to the under hood fuse box. Also at the negative battery cable where it connects to the engine.

My 2.7L V6 will occoally stall at stop. Always happens when the engine is up to temp. Some times the engine will "catch" it self almost stall and then surge. Have replace vehicle speed sensor, and cranshaft posiition sensor with no change. Engine will idle at 550-650 rpm which seems slow to me.

Runs smooth, accelrates quickly, and showes no other driveability issues.

I also have a Sebring that stalled last week for the first time since I bought it about 3 years ago.
Today it hesitated, but didn't stall, but this time the engine light came on. I took it to AutoZone and they found an 0340 error code which is somne how related to the cam position sensor. The guy at AutoZone urged me to take it in to the dealer right away. I dropped it off this evening and they're supposed to look at it tomorrow. If you want to respond, I would be glad to keep you updated on what they tell me. I will also do some research on-line to see if I can find anything that will help get it fixed properly.

This guide helped me

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/stall-at-idle

Please run down this guide and report back.

Timing belt broke, replaced the timing belt and head serviced. car runs but will not run with vacum line one coming from the vaule cover. Checked PVC and it was fine. If I place my finger on the hole on the intake where the PVC goes the engine shut off. And when I fully throtle the engine it surges.

I'm not sure I follow exactly what you're doing, but it sounds like the engine will run if you introduce extra air. If that sounds right, the problem might be due to having the battery disconnected during the head service. Disconnecting the battery will cause the Engine Computer to lose its memory. It will have to relearn minimum throttle before it knows when to be in charge of idle speed.

To meet the conditions for the relearn procedure to take place, drive at highway speed with the engine warmed up, then coast for at least seven seconds without touching the brake or gas pedals.

I put a new battery in the car now it want idle. I have drove it about 50 miles still will not idle. What do I have to do for it to relearn?Do I have to take it to the dealership to be put on a computer? It idle fine before the battery was change. It is a 3.0 liter auto trans.

Have you tried removing the negative battery cable for about a min booking it back up and see how it idles?Does it idle too high or too low?

1999 chrysler sebring convertable will, on occasion, not idle when cold. The car has also stalled when coming to a stop. The throttle can be used to overcome the failure to idle. What would be the most likely cause?

Check for vacuum leaks at the engine. Also, check fuel pump pressure. The most common cause of this type of problem is a bad idle air control valve (IAC). It is located on the throttle body.

Have you checked for codes in the computer yet? If you turn on the ac if the ac works does the idle increase?

Have you tried lightly taping on the idle air control motor to see if the idle goes up?There really is no trouble tree for what happened with replacing the battery.

You don't. It's automatic and set by the Engine Computer through the automatic idle speed motor.

If the battery was recently disconnected or run dead, the computer will have to relearn "minimum throttle" before it will know when it must be in control of idle speed. To meet the conditions for the relearn to take place, drive at highway speed with the engine warmed up, then coast for at least seven seconds without touching the brake or gas pedals.

Its possible but I don't know why that would fail when you changed the battery. You said it started the idle issue as soon as you changed the battery.

Engine Performance problem
1997 Chrysler Sebring 6 cyl Automatic 165k miles

My 97 Sebring misses, hesitates, sometimes stalls at idle and initial acceleration. No check engine light. My Actron scanner showed pending code of Multiple missfire #1,5,6. This car had a tuneup about 30k ago, new fuel filter this spring. So far I have: pulled and checked fuel filter (ok), added fuel treatment and prem. gas, cleaned dist. cap contacts & rotor, pulled cat. converter and "inspected" it, changed IAC valve, cleaned throttle body. After IAC valve installation car started, revved, I drove it at a constant 40mph per installation instr. It threw a CEL code high current to TPS. That cleared, thinking that may be part of the re-learning process. The car idles about 700rpm. If I carefully ease into the throttle it will speed up. If I just push on the gas it wants to stall. I adjusted slack at throttle cable and realized the car will not maintain an rpm between 700 & 1500. It's like all or nothing. I've ordered a new TPS which will be in tomorrow. Also- my diag. scanner shows no 02 sensor signal (no light or code) I find it hard to believe all 4 o2 sensors would go bad at once, is there a relay or something I can check? It's been 24 hrs. and I haven't received a replly. Do I need to donate more than $10 to get help?

Today I checked EGR valve (ok), cleaned ITC (OK), replaced MAP sensor and TPC sensor. Checked again for vacuum leaks. Still have miss at idle. Car drove good at highway speed. Misses at idle, wants to stall if you give it the gas when engine is at low speed.

Hi Joe,

Thanks for the donation, and no you don't have to donate any more. It just sometimes takes a day or so depending on how many donations questions we have, and there are only about 24 techs answering thousands of questions.

Anyway, have you checked the fuel pressure and fuel regulator?

I have replaced many parts in my sebring...i just had a water pump seize, which chrsyler put on, so that in turn caused my tensioner pulley and my idler pulley to go. My timing belt, serpentine belt were replaced and I had a major tune up done, and of course another water pump. Double platinum plug are in the car now.

Since that the check engine light is on solid. The car dies at idle until it warms up. After I am driving the car about 10 minutes there is no more dieing at stop signs or any other time. Once it sits over night we start all over again.

Which sensor could be causing this?

It doesn't have to be a sensor failure. It could be the fuel pressure regulator, or a failing/clogged injector or just gunk in your fuel system.

But before you begin removing/replacing parts, take your car to AutoZone and ask them to scan your computer. It's free.

This will give you a place to start.

Check the idle speed control motor and throttle position sensor. Might want to check the exhaust gas recirculating valve might be carboned-up causing the stalling/rough idle.

Did you change out the PCV valve recently. This prevents a pressure overload in the crank housing allowing the pistons and crank to run freely.

Another more serious problem is that your torque converter could be going bad. This causes a lot of resistance to the engine preventing it from idling at its normal steady speed. Sometimes a faulty torque converter will not show up on any diagnostics test considering there is not usually a sensor directly related to the converter. There will also be a severe loss in acceleration and horsepower.

There may also be a simpler less extreme problem where there is not enough air passing through your intake manifold which will also make things harder for the engine to idle. This can be resolve by recalibrating the manifold.
