car will not start starter dose not engage

the car has power but it will not start the starter will not engage I have talked to some people they say it is the sylonoid I don't think that is it I can't afford to take it to a shop I only have a part time job.

The first thing we need to do is determine if the starter is getting power. Have a helper turn the key to the start position while you check for voltage to the smaller wire on the starter. You should have 12v. If you do, remove the starter and have it bench tested at a parts store. It will most likely be bad. If there is no power, check the starter relay to see if there is power there that may indicate a bad relay.
