Many things can cause this; clutches, linkage to the transmission, transmission control module, bad torque converter, faulty front pump in the transmission. Have the computer scanned to determine if there is a code related to the transmission. If there is, it should help limit the number of possibilities. Also, make sure the linkage to the transmission is still connected and not damaged.

Transmission problem
2000 Mazda 626 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 100000 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
when you put the gear shift in reverse it acts
exactly like putting it in neutral. No noise.
the other gears work fine & the fluid looks OK.
Are there any connectors or linkages i can check?
I do not have the repair manual yet.
Can a tranny fail in this way? I'm assuming it is
some sort of electrical control problem or a mechanical
linkage come lose.

Hi there,

This is sounding like an internal failure of the reverse servo, or drive band? clutch. You would be best served having a transmission specialist inspect it first hand, there are a few items that can be tested, but this will have to be done with specialist equipment by the transmission builder.

Firstly, is the fluid level up?
Is the linkage to the shift rod on the transaxle all functioning?
When you shift into drive, does either driveaxle spin?
Does the transaxle make any unusual noises in drive or reverse?
Please advise.

THERE IS NO NOISE WHEN SHIFTING GEARS, HOWEVER WHEN THE CABLE IS PLACED BACK ON ROD I CAN PUT THE CAR IN DRIVE, REVERSE,ETC. AND IT WORKS, BUT SOMETHING IS NEEDED TO KEEP THE CABLE FROM FALLING OFF AGAIN WHEN I SHIFT TO ANOTHER GEAR

I'm not sure what you mean by the $5.00 charge. We, as moderators don't deal with the money. We have no idea how much the posters donate. There should be contact information on the page you signed in on.
On your shift cable, according to the drawing, there's supposed to be a snap on cap to hold the cable in place. Obviously, yours is gone. This cay be available through a parts store, or you'll have to go to the dealer. Meanwhile, can you hold it on with tyraps or something for now?

My car will go into drive but moves slowly. It also will reverse but moves faster than when in drive. I was told that it was my transmission but I wanna know is that correct?

Lack of acceleration, chugging, hesitating, jerking, bogging, misfiring etc. could be caused by one of the following below

Oxygen sensor.
Catalytic converter.
Fuel injectors dirty/sticking.
Mass airflow sensor/Airflow meter.
Throttle position sensor.
Crankshaft position sensor
Knock sensor
Manifold absolute pressure sensor.
EGR Valve
Fuel pressure regulator leaking or defective fuel pump.
False air leakage.
Fuel contamination.
Foul/defective spark plugs.
Open spark plug wires.
Ignition coil/Coil packs defective.
Incorrect ignition timing.
Cap and rotor.

Note:If it doesn't apply disregard it
