The car shuts down unexpectedly while driving slowly. Especially at stoplights and in traffic. When I accelerate the engine just shuts down. When I start the car it starts again and I can drive away. But this unexpected stopping is dangerous since I already had two near accidents because other drivers were not expecting me to just stop. Once, at a roundabout, I accelerated and the car stopped. Another car almost hit me.

In May the mechanic put a small electrical pump on the diesel filter which did not solve the problem. In July he then replaced the turbo motor which did not solve the problem. Two weeks ago the alternator was replaced, as well as the heating plugs. No solution either.

Finally another mechanic suggested last Monday that maybe the fuel tank is the problem. A scan today showed (they say) that the 'governor' in the fuel tank is not working properly. This mechanic suggested that I buy a new car because the repairs will be too expensive.

I do not agree that I should buy a new car. My car drives okay, no other problems except for the sudden death. Engine sounds okay when I drive continuously, it is only when I slow down I can hear the engine changing to a 'deeper' sound and sometimes this sound is followed by 'engine death'.

Also, sometimes while driving on the highway for a while, the engine starts to 'shudder', but then returns to normal.

When I drive in the neighborhood (short distances), everything is fine. When I drive to work, which is 1,5 hour drive to the city, the problem occurs. The mechanic who suggested that the fuel pump might be a problem said that the problem is related to the temperature of the engine after driving for a long tome. He gave a complicated explanation about pressures etc. He also said that placing the electrical pump on the diesel filter only exacerbated the pressure problem in the fuel tank.

I don't know. Everybody here is some kind of amateur. I am very suspicious now of all these diagnoses, explanations and solutions.

Do you think that changing the 'governor' will solve the problem? I am scared to drive my car now, so I don't. It cost me a lot of money now to get to work by taxi.

I love my car. I never had any serious problems before, but the last four months have been very bad and stressful.

Thank you.
