Car stalls when turning the steering wheel (left or right)

When turning the car into a parking space (either reverse or frontwards) the car tends to stall and start up again. The radio and lights switch off and then they turn back on again. Today it stalled (all dashboard lights were burning) and I had to restart. It seems to be happening when the car has around 1/4 tank filled and it doesn’t happen all the time. What can the issue be? The garage sent me away without taking me seriously so I don’t know what to do.

Hi,

Can you tell me if you have noticed the engine speed (RPM's) are low when you have the vehicle in gear and not moving? To me, it sounds like when you add the load of the power steering pump, the idle air control system, which should increase RPM to compensate, isn't working and allowing the engine to drag and stall. Do you notice the engine slows down at an idle if you turn the AC on?

Hi,

I don’t notice any change in engine revs/noise.
I haven’t noticed anything unusual when switching on the A/C.
It has happened on a number of occasions and on each occasion the steering wheel has been turned to practically its maximum and it happens in both left and right turns. For example on the last occasion I was reversing into a parking space on a road this involving a 90 degree reverse maneuver and on this occasion the car stalled. On previous occasions the engine recovered but on this occasion I had to restart the engine. I repeated the steering wheel turn and the engine stalled again (the steering wheel is turned to full lock). I have noticed during the previous occasions it occurred when the was less than 1/4 full.

I suspect the fuel level was a coincidence. However, the idea that it happened when the power steering pump was under a load, I have a feeling it is related to the idle air control valve (IAC). I'm not sure where you are located, but in the US, the i20 isn't available. As a result, I have no technical info on it.

What I would suggest is to try a few simple things such as cleaning the throttle body and IAC system. Here are two links that explain how to do both. First, I would start by cleaning the throttle body. If that doesn't take care of it, then move to the IAC.
