Revving by itself and making funny noises when first started

When I first start my car, it seems to be revving by itself (goes from just under ten to about twenty revs) and does this for about thirty seconds then stops. It is very weird and fairly scary! When I was driving yesterday, my car was juddering so do not know if this is related. Is it something to worry about?
