Hello there, any help would be great. my car just lost power last Friday then just wouldn’t start again was stranded for 5 hours until aa turned up I put my OBD scanner on it while I was waiting and had code P0087 Code: Fuel Rail/System Pressure Too Low tried starting it multiple times but no joy and also AA tried as well still no joy so I was recovered to my home address. Now my friends garage come and took it yesterday and I’ve spoken to him this morning and he started it first time and also said it didn’t need towing as it started for him but I also tried every day until Wednesday as it wouldn’t start and I have also tried it up his garage this morning and it starts first time so I baffled as to what it could be and to honest so was he so I’m just wondering if anyone has any idea what could be causing this please.

The P0087 Code is the clue, I have seen the high-pressure fuel pump go out as well as the low-pressure lift pump inside the tank, when you turn the system on (not cranking) do you hear both the fuel pump come on for about five seconds? If so, I would lean towards the high-pressure fuel pump or the fuel pressure sensor in the fuel rail. I have seen both can cause this problem, this is why the dealer will replace both when having this issue. Check out the images (below). Let us know how it goes.

Thanks again for the reply. I’m going up the garage Monday morning but just a quick question and probably a stupid question. Now that the car is now starting normally that this is very likely to happen again and probably soon as I’m just a bit confused as to why it started to start normally after 5 days with nothing being done to it.

When parts start to fail it can be intermittent, or you got a bad tank of gas which happens.

Thanks again for the reply. I’ve just lost a bit of confidence in the car now and bit wary about driving it as in just over a week I’ve supposed to take it to the airport for my holidays and the my sons graduation both things I surely don’t want to break down on my way to and are 1 hour and 1 and half hour drives so just a bit wary.

Yep, that is a worry when problems like this occur. This is the hardest problem to fix and can take time FYI. We need a breakout box that records the failure as it happens or hope for a trouble code to be triggered. Bad gas will not be detected by the computer.

Thanks again for replying and pardon my stupidity again, but isn’t that the code that was given out anyway as in the original post? Or is that just like you said earlier just a general code which could point to a number of things?

And if it were bad gas I only ask because I filled it up full myself and then it has only gone like this now it’s down to 1/4 of a tank left so would it take that long for it to go wrong? And I’m also confused by how after 5 days it just started again with nothing being done to it seems very strange to me but like I say I know absolutely nothing about cars!!

Oh ya, my bad, I deal with so many questions. It is the fuel issue. I would try the sensor first and then if you hear the fuel pump run in the tank it is pointing towards the high-pressure pump.

Yeah I bet! Okay great. I called up this morning it wouldn’t start for him again on Friday, but it did throw up a trouble code for the fuel sensor though.

Yep, lean towards the sensor or pump. That is what I would do.
