Came out to a car that wouldn't start early Thursday morning. No clicking; no lights when I turned the ignition. Tried jumping it to no avail. Roadside assistance couldn't jump it off. He said the battery tested as good (barely a year old). Tow guy got it working without jumping it. Got it to Honda where they claimed it was a bad starter. Replaced the starter. Allegedly tested the battery, alternator, and solenoid. Drove fine for 1.5 days. Shut off on me Saturday afternoon after a five minute stop. Weird because I'd stopped earlier without issue. Again there was no clicking, no flashing lights. Tried jumping it. Nothing. It took RA over a half an hour to jump it off with two boosters and changing up the ground multiple times. Had intermittent door chimes and ignition dinging before car finally started. Drove it home. Tried to restart it after a 45 minute drive. Same problem. Electrical system short?

Hello,

There is a starter cut relay that needs to be checked/replaced. here is a guide to help you test it and the relay location as well as the starter wiring diagrams so you can see how the system works:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-an-electrical-relay-and-wiring-control-circuit

Check out the diagrams (below). Please let us know what you find. We are interested to see what it is.

while i was driving and saw the red signal and brought the car to neutral and suddenly the car stopped. I tried to start immediately and when i turned the key there is no cranking sound, no digital display in the speedometer and it even did not start. I repeated it for two or three more times and the result is same. Then suddenly when the display has come in the speedometer i started the car and it started.

why did the car did not crank and did not start?

I am thinking the terminals are lose on the battery. Open your hood and make sure both terminals are free of corrosion and are on tight.

Sterted my car after work. Drove to the store. Came out of the store ten minutes later and my car would not start. All you would here when you turned the key is a click. It would not turn over. What do you think the problem could be. I replaced the battery about a year ago. All the electric was working fine. Sam Hutchison

check battery condition first including load test. have starter checked or see if same power as battery is getting to starter. or if you have an assistant try to start car and hit starter body with hammer if car starts starter needs replacing.

Battery is good - lights come on strong and when jumped runs fine. Fuses all look good under hood. When trying to start clicking noise and all computer icons flashing. Think it might be the solenoid on the starter. Any help is appreciated.

First I would check to see if your cables or battery terminals are corroded that could cause a bunch of resistance stopping the nessesary power from reaching the starter. (If you can check to see if there is 12 volts at the starter then your cables are probably good) Then check to make sure your ground connections are good. After all that I would suspect the starter as well. Let me know how it goes and well as any more questions you would have.

I have a 2005 Honda Civic LX with a little over 43k. The check engine light had been blinking when I start the car (stayed on a little longer), but eventually would turn off. Tonight, the car wouldn't start, even with a jump. I got it started by pushing then popping the clutch. When I put the key in and turn it to start, all of the lights on the dash come on, it just doesn't turn over. Am I looking at a starter or solenoid problem here?

Hello !!

start checking the clutch switch ..

Depress the pedal all the way and play with the ignition switch..

could be a bad switch..
if test it good then remove and bench test the starter..

good luck!

Have you had the battery checked? Or are you assuming that you since you hear a few relays clicking the battery is good?

That does not tell you much of anything. You need to check it with a battery tester that puts it under load.

Hello, I'm Danny.

It sounds like you might be having an issue with the starter motor. It sounds like the starter motor solenoid is defective or not working. If you remove the starter motor from your car most all auto parts stores will test for free. Here are some tutorials for you to view showing what is involved:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-a-starter-and-solenoid-works

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/starter-not-working-repair

I would be happy to include do it yourself replacement guides if interested.Hope this helps and let me know if you have any further questions on this issue. Thanks for using 2CarPros.

I turn the key and her a click but starter does not turn over. I had battery and starter checked and they seem to be ok. If I key turning the key it will finally turn the starter. A friend told me it is probably the ignition switch. Do you have any ideas, before I take to to a mechanic to replace a $450 iGnetion switch?

If you're hearing a response when you turn the ignition switch, it's not the switch. If that's a single rather loud clunk each time you turn the switch, there's burned contacts in the starter solenoid or a bad battery cable or connection. Use a test light to measure the voltage on the battery cable at the starter. You'll find 12 volts there. Watch what happens when a helper tries to crank the engine. If the light goes out, there's a bad cable connection. If it stays bright, suspect the starter. When the starter has an intermittent problem like this, any testing has to be done while the problem is occurring.

Do the voltage test so we know where we stand. Need to know what is making the sound you're hearing. Could have a bad contact in the neutral safety switch / transmission range switch.

I'll be back in two days to see how you're doing.

The starter motor could have a bad spot on it which is typical of the Honda starter. Have you anything to report back on?

I was driving to the shop and i think i heard a whining noise but not sure. then my radio just cut out, i kept switching it back on, but it would only last a couple of seconds without signal and switch back off again. then when i went into the shop i left my car running i came out and when i went to reverse back i turned the steering wheel and my EPS light came on my steering locked and my car cut out and now it will not start. i do not know anything about cars so any information would be grateful.

"Does not start" can mean different things. I am guessing the starter does not crank the engine fast enough for it to start and run. Based on the progression of symptoms, the typical cause is a failure of the charging system to recharge the battery. You should have seen the "battery" warning light on the dash. The car will be running on just the battery until it runs down, and that will last from a half hour to perhaps as much as an hour. As the voltage in the electrical system slowly drops, various computers will start to shut down, in this case, starting with the radio.

The engine should start with a jump-start, then immediately have the charging system tested. Those tests only take a few minutes. I have been reading way too much lately about the severe damage people do when jump-starting an engine incorrectly, or when they connect battery cables backward. When you connect jumper cables, one connects to the positive post on one car, and the positive post on the other car. The second cable connects to the negative post on both cars.

When i jump start it will i have to keep it on the leads to get enough charge to take my car home as it is still at the shop i stay five minutes from there i do not want to be driving it and it cuts out at a dangerous place. do you think it could be the alternator?

A jump-start will get it going right away, but the battery needs to have enough charge to keep the electrical system running for the drive home. Leave the cables on for a good ten minutes or more. The best would be to use a portable charger to charge the battery at a slow rate for an hour or two. To make the battery last as long as possible, turn off the radio, heater fan, and all possible lights. Drive away before the engine has a chance to warm up. That will reduce the likelihood of the electric radiator fan having to turn on.

The generator is the best suspect, but we normally want to rule out wiring problems first.

Battery not providing sufficient current. Check battery voltage and if possible a high rate discharge test.

Bad main earthing cable. Check and see if the earth cables are ok

Battery terminals bad connection. Clean battery terminals.

Try using jumper from vehicle battery negative to any part of engine to act as additional earthing to see if it works.
