Car door will not close

My name is Dave. It sounds to me that it is most likely that the door latch is in either the safety or latched position. This is an easy fie, if you take a screwdriver and put it in the latch where the door striker ( the post that stick out of the car that the latch grabs ) goes, pull the door handle and move the screwdriver towards the inside of the door it should open the latch allowing the door to close properly.
