Cannot change gears

Cannot change gears when engine is running. A grating sound and stick stiff will not budge. Okay when engine off.

That sounds like a failed clutch or seized pilot bearing. Both will let the transmission turn with the engine and make it so you cannot shift gears. It means the transmission has to come out and replace the failed parts.
