2001 Cadillac STS Alternator Replacement/Computer reset

I had an alternator replaced due to overcharging. The car really had no problems that I could see beforehand but did notice high voltage so I figured I'd be proactive and get it done before it starting causing issues. Anyway I had it done and got a phone call from the mechanic stating that after they put it in, they now cannot start the car (anti theft computer issue) He is saying that I need to pay a few hundred dollars to get the computer resynced....Just seems weird to me that they "forgot" to mention this before the replacement. I have a gut feeling they screwed something up and want me to foot the bill. Is resyncing the computer system standard after an alternator replacement? Any input would be much appreciated.

Souldnt be, heres what the book calls for. Maybe they didnt remove the negative cable? GENERATOR Removal 1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Remove the drive belt. Remove the engine cooling fans. 2. Disconnect the wiring harness connector from the generator. Reposition the protective boot from the generator output BAT terminal for access. Remove the generator output BAT terminal nut and disconnect the positive lead from the generator. See Fig. 2 . 3. Loosen the lower generator bolt. Remove the generator bolts from the generator. Remove the generator from the vehicle. See Fig. 1 . Fig. 2: Identifying Generator Electrical Leads Courtesy of GENERAL MOTORS CORP. Installation 1. Position the generator to the A/C compressor and engine. See Fig. 1 . Install the generator mounting bolts. Tighten the generator mounting bolts to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . 2. Connect the wiring harness connector to the generator. See Fig. 2 . Connect the battery positive lead and install the generator output BAT terminal nut. Tighten the generator output BAT terminal nut to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . 3. Press the protective boot on to the generator output BAT terminal. Install the engine cooling fans. Install the drive belt. Connect the battery negative cable. Tighten cable to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . NOTE: The Denso SC1 (KG9) generator is serviced as a complete unit only.

So basically if the installation/replacement is done correctly there would be no need to touch the computer system correct?
