2001 Cadillac Seville stabilty system

My car occasionally displays "service stability system", I have been told that this is basically some sensors,however from time to time I can feel a mechanical engagement and the info center then says" stability system engaged'. What is this and what can I check to see why it does it for no reason at all.

scan your codes, off and down on the mode button at the same time, with your key in the on position
