A/C evaporator

I have a 1995 Cadallic SLS with 140,000 miles.We were told in order to replace the a/c evaporator the engine would have to be removed.The estimate was 1800.00 to R&R engine,replace the evaporator, recharge and check for leaks. This sounds questionable to me. I'd like your opinion.Thanks. Mike.

I've got a '99 deville with the same problem, and rather then pay the $1800 I opted to change the evaporator myself, and beleive me it's been a major pain so far and I still don't have it out. Hope you find a solution
