Service ride control

Nine times out of ten the problem is a leak in one of the rear air shocks. You get the service light because the system cannot control itself and then times our giving you the service light. I would replace both its not that bad of job here are the diagrams to help you. Check out the diagrams (below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed. Cheers

Okay, I finally got the code. Here it is:

C0660
Level control exhaust valve circuit malfunction.

Mine ended up needing a new auto ride compressor. Apparently there was water that got in and started to rust. I pull a boat once in a while with my vehicle and that may have been the contributing factor. They removed the auto ride compressor and tested the exhaust valve and found an open circuit in the valve.

The replaced kit was an auto ride compressor part number 15254590. The Diagnostic code was C066.

I would go to a mechanic you trust and have them pull the diagnostic code to see what that code is. Not an Autozone or the like because all they can do as I understand it is read the codes that are generated from the "check engine". My check engine light never came on, just the digital display that said service ride control.

The bad news:
$498.00 for the kit.
$144.00 Labor.

My 2003 Cadillac Escalade has the service ride control message that keeps appearing, and yesterday the Stability SYS disabled and the service brake system message appeared. I took it to the mechanic, and only the C0660 code was diagnosed.

Can the auto ride compressor be the cause of all the messages? the mechanic also said something about the cushions, but I changed them almost a year ago.

I have the same problem and same error code - and this is the second time!

I had the auto ride compressor replaced six months ago by the Cadillac dealer.

Hopefully there will not be additional charges to fix it again. When I start the engine there seems to be a vibration from the console and I noticed the compressor sound is no longer apparent.

I had also experienced the stability SYS problem (more money) soon after the compressor replacement.

how to diagnose the ride control system?

It almost requires the use of a scan tool. For one to read the codes, check data, and perform system functions. If you can at least get a code, there may be some assistance available here.

My service ride control on the DIC came on earlier. I do not know what that means. looked it up in the owners manual and it said a problem with my suspension?

It would have a relevant fault code stored that would need to be extracted to establish a repair. A scan tool or code reader is necessary, but not all code readers will interface with most vehicle sub-systems.

Service ride control, code CO580 what is the part? Is it part of the shocks?

Circuit Description
The suspension damper solenoid is driven ON and OFF by the Electronic Suspension Control (ESC) module. To activate the suspension damper solenoid it is initially subjected to full battery voltage for a short period of time. Once the suspension damper solenoid is pulled-in the supply voltage is Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) . The amount the suspension damper solenoid valve is activated is based on inputs from the driver Tow/Haul Switch, road inputs, position sensor inputs and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).

Conditions for Running the DTC
The ESC module performs a test on each suspension damper solenoid during both the ON and OFF states.

Conditions for Setting the DTC


A short to ground in the control circuit of the suspension damper solenoid.
A short to voltage in the control circuit of the suspension damper solenoid.
An open in the control circuit of the suspension damper solenoid.
An open in the solenoid low reference circuit of the suspension damper solenoid.
A short to voltage in the solenoid low reference circuit of the suspension damper solenoid.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets


The suspension damper solenoid will be disabled.
All suspension damper solenoids will be disabled.
The SERVICE RIDE CONTROL message will be displayed.
Stores a DTC C0575, C0580, C0585 or C0590 in the ESC module memory.
Conditions for Clearing the DTC


The ESC module no longer detects a problem in the low reference circuit or the control circuit of the suspension damper solenoid.
Using the scan tool.
A history DTC will clear after 100 consecutive ignition cycles if the condition for the malfunction is no longer present.
Diagnostic Aids

Important: Ignition cycle counting is used by the ESC module to detect faults in the system. The objective is to eliminate false/intermittent codes while maintaining an acceptable level of system performance. The operation of the ignition cycle counting requires that a fault condition be present for four consecutive ignition cycles before it will set the fault code and display the "SERVICE RIDE CONTROL" message. If a fault code is present (without a fault being current), the system will go into one or more degraded modes without displaying a message. Resetting the ignition cycle counter is done by clearing codes with a scan tool. Clearing codes will override ignition cycle counting for one ignition cycle. Therefore, a fault condition will set the fault code immediately if it occurs on the first ignition cycle after the codes are cleared.

If DTC C0870 or C0690 is present, repair the malfunction for these DTCs before diagnosing DTC C0575, C0580, C0585 or C0590.
It may be necessary to check Testing for Intermittent and Poor Connections.

Test Description
The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.


Checks control circuit/control module.
Tests for low reference circuit of the suspension damper solenoid. The ESC module supplies ground of the suspension damper solenoid.
Verifies that the resistance of the suspension damper solenoid.
Tests the control circuit to the suspension damper solenoid for an open and short to voltage.
Tests the control circuit for a short to ground.
Replace and program the ESC module.

It is not as easy as a part. a code never identifies a bad part, just a failed system.

Thanks for the response. I did see a shop-that is how I got the code, but he said the suspension damper "solenoid is inside the front shock absorber so the shocks need to be changed". He quoted $600.00 each so that is why I was investigating further, and thus the question if it is in the shock.

I also found some aftermarket shocks that are at least a little less than Cadillac direct. Would they work okay with the system?

Yes, they look okay. They are not OEM but will bolt up the same as OEM.

I guess more specifically - they are electronic shocks, would you expect that they work with the ride control satisfactorily, not just fit mechanically (mounting)?

Usually my auto suspension in my 2006 Cadillac Escalade hums when I am on uneven ground. It was really loud today, more than usual. Any suggestions? It has been a little colder than usual. Not sure if that has anything to do with it or not. I would appreciate any feedback or suggestions about this issue. Also, if anyone has any questions for me, feel free to ask.

Yes, they may not give you the ride quality, but that is why the factory ones are a lot more money.

If the pump runs and it turns off like normal, most likely all that happened is the mounting bushings have gotten hard in the cold weather and are transmitting the normal noise better, or they are deteriorated and the metal bracket is rubbing on one of the mounting bolts. Other bushings will also be harder when they are cold and they will not isolate noises very well. That is why cars make as much noise in really cold weather as our bodies do. I would not be too concerned yet unless the noise gets loud on a warmer day.

How do I go about resetting my service ride control light on my vehicle?

Clearing the codes with a scan tool. If it has been repaired, then the light should go out when the fault no longer exists. If it is a hard fault, the message will come back in a short time after clearing.

Thanks for the input. I have been unable to find some with a code scanner in my area, that will pick up Cadillac codes. It started when it got cold out, it think there may have been some water in the air line and possibly made a blockage. because everything seems to be fine.

Is there any way to manually override the air suspension on this truck? The truck is sagging and the compressor is not automatically lifting it.

check to see if the armlink from control arm to frame is okay. this is what the computer uses to set ride height.

I had the compressor go out on my escalade. I replaced all the shocks with Arnott brand replacements. I also replaced the compressor with APDTY 050111 Air Ride Suspension Compressor w/Dryer & Steel Housing (Complete Plug-n-Play Assembly For Active Air Suspension Systems Replaces GM Part #: 15254590).

The issue is that I'm still seeing the service ride control error on my dic. I hear the compressor running and I've pulled all the trouble codes that I could find.

Did you clear the codes when you did the repair or did you just pull them? Is everything working properly?

What trim package/level Escalade is it?

I did clear the codes and the service ride control came back on the DIC within five minutes. It is is just the base model.

P0522 indicates Engine Oil Pressure switch circuit voltage low and would have nothing to do with the air ride system.

C0040 is a front wheel speed sensor circuit issue. This could (but probably would not) affect the ride control system.

C0196 means Yaw rate System malfunction. Possible, but doubtful.

C0455 Steering Position Circuit Sensor malfunction. Also not terribly likely.

It actually sounds like you have got a problem with the Body Control Module. I would head over to a junkyard and see if they will let you swap modules around to check yours.

I was wondering how to clear the message on my dash "service ride control." I have done just about everything I can think of in order to clear it out but it is done, no good. I replaced the air shocks, air compressor, and checked all fuses. Any more ideas?

Shame you did not get a diagnosis and would not have wasted all that money.

Self leveling system does automatically level out the vehicle. Is there a fuse or relay for it and where is it located? Also, where is the leveling sensor located? If you have to replace the compressor motor do you only have to disconnect the hoses at the motor or on the shock?

The is a pump, height sensor and the shocks. See if the pump comes on, if it does no the pump may be the issue. If it does, the shocks may be bad.

Load level is not working.

The system needs to be checked. The compressor, relay, height sensing valve and the shocks for leaking.

Not a simple process. You need a shop with a scan tool that can turn the system on and off.
