2001 Cadillac Deville Beginning to use oil

The last year or so I have noticed an increase in the use of engine oil (synthetic) between oil changes (generaly 3,000 miles). Generallly about a quart or so. I just drove a 1,000 miles from New Jersey to Sarasota, Fla. When I reached Jacksonville the oil low light came on and I stopped and purchased two quarts of oil. The manual said that when light came on there was only one quart (?) left in transmission. I plan to have the oil changed in the next day or two.

What could be happening and what may be the consequences?

You mean one quart left in engine, that is incorrect. When the low oil light comes on, it is about two quarts low, and the crankcase holds just shy of eight. Acceptable oil consumption has been determined to be one quart in 2000 miles, under normal service. What I would do first, is an oil consumption test to determine the rate. Start out with the oil verified at the full line on the stick, and check it periodically. Keep somewhat of a log, and get a specific average. Once it is determined to be abnormal, than you can weigh options. Generally, a pistion ring cleaning procedure is the initial step in addressing the concern, at a minimal cost.
